SPCA Saving Lives and making a difference in our community

Embracing the Saving Lives initiative ensures that all BOISPCA rehomed Cats & Dogs are desexed, which will have a downstream effect of reducing unwanted animals in the future.

Desexing programs, and rehoming animals as quick as possible are two key elements in saving lives, we take this opportunity to thank our loyal members along with the wonderful people in the Bay of Islands and surrounding districts for their help in adopting the BOISPCA cats and Dogs

In 2009 the BOISPCA handled 798 animals in total, we found new homes for 244, the balance were either returned to their owners or still in our care at the end of the year or released back into the wild (ie birds) ) or euthanized.  Common reasons for euthanasia include ill health, such poor temperament that the animals were unsuitable for adoption, and insufficient new homes being available.  We hope to improve on the rehoming rate by furthering the aims of the "Saving Lives" initiative and gaining further funding & resources to assist with those initiatives.  

National Office in Auckland have instigated the “Saving Lives” programme which is aimed in the long term to try and save as many animal lives as possible and avoid any unnecessary euthanizing of animals.  The steps towards this ultimate goal are really getting behind the desexing of animals, getting our adoption rates up and pet retention by owners.
